Hello everyone. Today (5/5/09) in social studies class, I learn about a group of people called the "Mayans"(Mesoamerican civilization). They created a calendar which showing what events would occur on the earth up to the dates and year.

Now they said, in the year 2012,... that would be the end of human race, or a large amout of people would die.

Here is some info I copyed and paste from Wikiapedia.com

QuoteThe 2012 Doomsday prediction is a present-day cultural meme proposing that cataclysmic and apocalyptic events will occur in the year 2012. This idea has been disseminated by numerous books, internet sites and by TV documentaries. The forecast is based primarily on what is claimed to be the end-date of the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar, which is presented as lasting 5,125 years and as terminating on December 21, 2012, and incorporates warnings from climate experts and other environmental scientists that the Earth has reached a tipping point that could generate mass extinctions, as well as interpretations of assorted legends, scriptures and prophecies. A New Age interpretation of this transition posits that, during this time, the planet and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation rather than an armageddon, and that 2012 may well be the end of the world as we know it, but it is safe to assume that we will all still, in fact, feel fine.[1] Historian Richard G. Kyle notes that predictions of the imminent end of the world have a very long history, with hundreds of documented examples, some associated with religious prophecies, others with astronomical events such as comets or eclipses, and others with calendar events such as the millennium.[2] The significance of this date in Mayanism stems from the ending of the current baktun cycle of the Maya calendar in 2012. Many believe that the ending of this cycle will correspond with a global "consciousness shift" and the beginning of a new age, although others criticize this construal of the date.[5] Speculation about this date can be traced to the first edition of The Maya (1966) by Michael D. Coe."[6] , in which he suggested the date of December 24, 2011 (later revised to December 23, 2012) would mark the end of civilization: There is a suggestion . . . that Armageddon would overtake the degenerate peoples of the world and all creation on the final day of the thirteenth [baktun]. Thus … our present universe … [would] be annihilated on December 23, 2012, when the Great Cycle of the Long Count reaches completion.[7] This date became the subject of speculation by Frank Waters, who devotes two chapters to its interpretation, including discussion of an astrological chart for this date and its association with Hopi prophecies in Mexico Mystique: The Coming Sixth Age of Consciousness (1975)[8]. The significance of the year 2012 (but not a specific day) was mentioned briefly by José Argüelles in The Transformative Vision (1975)[9]. Waters' book inspired further speculation by John Major Jenkins in the mid-1980s, including revision of the date to one corresponding with the winter solstice in 2012. Interpretations of the date became the subject of further speculation by José Argüelles in The Mayan Factor (1987) [10] , promoted at the 1987 Harmonic Convergence. It received further elaboration in the Novelty theory of Terence McKenna. An astronomical conjunction of the black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy with the winter solstice Sun on December 21, 2012, referred to by John Major Jenkins in Galactic Alignment as having been predicted by the ancient Maya and others, is a much-anticipated event in Mayanism[11]. Although Jenkins suggests that ancient Maya knowledge of this event was based on observations of the "dark rift" in the Milky Way as seen from Earth, others interpret it as evidence of knowledge imparted via ancient contact with extraterrestrial intelligence. The relevance of modern "dark rift" observations to Pre-Columbian and traditional Maya beliefs is strongly debated, and many academic archaeologists have been skeptical of all theories regarding extraterrestrial contact, but it is clear that the promotion of Mayanism through interest in 2012 doomsday scenarios is contributing to the evolution of religious syncretism in contemporary Maya communities.[citation needed] Psychonaut and author Daniel Pinchbeck popularized New Age concepts about this date, linking[vague] it to beliefs about crop circles, alien abduction, and personal revelations based on the use of entheogens and mediumship in his 2006 book 2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl [12] . Pinchbeck argues for a shift in consciousness rather than an apocolpyse, suggesting that materialistic attitudes, rather than the material world, are in jeopardy.[13] Semir Osmanagić, the archaeologist responsible for promoting the Bosnian pyramids, referred to December 21, 2012 in the conclusion of his book The World of the Maya[14]. He suggests that that "Advancement of DNA may raise us to a higher level" and concludes, "When the 'heavens open' and cosmic energy is allowed to flow throughout our tiny Planet, will we be raised to a higher level by the vibrations".[14]

What is your opinion on this? Do you think the end of the world will be in 2012, or it it just a next prank to scare the public. Just note, the last time they said this would happen is for the year 2000. The year 2000 came and nothing happened.

No, it isn't. The "end" will happen when the Anti-christ tries to take over. He will get a wound and Satin will go "into" him, and take over his body. Now, all the people that lived by God's rules (the Bible) will be taken to heaven before Satin makes the Earth, Hell. Satin will give out the Mark of the Beast. You must accept the Mark to trade or even live in the "new" Earth. But, if you accept the Mark you will immediately be sent to Hell if they die. So to go to Heaven if you weren't taken before, you must pray and denie the Mark. There will be Satinists (like Christians, but they worship Satin) trying to cut your head off... literally. You must fight back. Don't let them kill you just to go to Heaven. Fight the good fight. Once (I don't know something happens), Jesus comes back with an army of 1000 angels and beats the sh-.. crap.. out of Satin and all of the, um.. "bad people".. Then Earth turns into Heaven and everythere lives a magnificent never ending life... A, PERFECT, life. If you want to read the whole thing about this, get a Bible and go to the end. Read the Revelation. Long, but interesting.. God doesn't tell us when this happens, but there will be signs. The swine flu may be one.. There's scrolls in the Revelation, 7 of them, and other stuff, and swine flu goes along with one. If you don't believe in God, than I will pray for you.. I hope you found this, um.. Interesting? Can't find a smarter word >.> Live worshipping God buddy! And nobodies perfect, you will sin.. Ask God for forgiveness and he will forgive and forget.. Just don't ask for forgiveness knowing you are going to do it again..

That was very.... interesting...
What if your not Christian? :P

Anyway, I don't think the world is going to end in 2012, because thats when I'm supposed to graduate from high school! ::)
Our class is special; we left the 8th grade in 2008, were leaving the 9th in 2009, going to leave 10th in 2010... and so on. That won't happen for another 100 years! 8)

1dawg4you, I don't thing the comming of Jesus will be in 2012. No one knows for sure.

As to Ryan I talked to my history teacher and they said it base base of there religion, and math of the Mayas.

It would sound point-less going to school for me , casue I too am going to graduate 9th in 2009, 10th in 2010, 11th in 2011 and 12th in 2012. That just sounds werid, knowing that I'm going to die in 2012.

Let's not be all Nostradamus and say what would or would not happen on 2012.
If it'll happen, it will; and if it doesn't, it doesn't.
No use worrying about or refuting against it.

There are bigger things to be concerned about for the moment.

what does it matter? live ur life to the fullest, and if we all die on 2012, who will know? and yeah athieism doesnt give a crap about christian beliefs, and i dont think that religous comments should be brought on to this game due to the fact that someone on here might me offended, and trini, wikipiedia is a site where even i can post something on there and it would be considered the truth, dogs eat cats for entertainment by the way, and cows regurgitate grass to gross out humans, i have a pervy one coming up, just exit if u dont want to see it, vaginas are just inverted penis' that work in a totally different way, i warned you not to read it, and pav is right, how about the pirates, global warming, stock market, the "war" we are supposedly still in, and if it happens it happens and i will be a sophmore or jr. in high school if and when it happens

Triniboy

yes, but I guess the end being in 2012 is only base of religion. Cause I see nothing in logic that can explain of the world ending in 2012

just a date on the mayan calender, and they say they stopped the calendar because they knew it would end on that exact date, who knows maybe they got tired or bored of making an extremely long and pointless calendar that got every one worked up about a day, and what happened on Y2K? nothing happened!!!!! the world was supposed to be over run by machines and that didnt happen

Well the mayas dies out...spanish came and ruled over land. As for what i learn, The mayas belived that there had been 4 suns(gods i guess). They belived when they killed comeone by laying them on the back, cut open there chest and pull out there heart while its alive, burn the heart, and chop of head of person, it would please the god. As for the suns, there had been 4, as for there were in the last 1. So they think by doing that it would feed the god and keep the sun lasting longer....crazy.

P.S More than 30,000 people a year died.
Once they also did a special one, with 20,000 in like a week.

Back then they stored dates as 90 for 1990, and on January 1st 2000 the computers would mistake it for either 1900 or 19100, which would cause mass failures. They checked and fixed the bug so nothing happened.

Banjo Hick

ok, so the dates on ur computer would be messed up, big wup, dont pay attention to that, just move on with ur life, and they fixed the bug before the date happened so why would they keep making a big deal about it even after that when they knew the bug was fixed? and how would the date being messed up on ur computer cause it to fail? and trini, i knew they died out, trying to put out a point

The dates would confuse computers into thinking it was January 1st, 1900 causing problems on Wall Street, missile launch systems, and airlines, but they fixed it before it could happen. Please do some research before posting one of your smart ass replies.

Just because we say , does not mean its true, and the mayas as for my information are not christans in my view. Most though I did'nt mean to go into religion, mostly stay into base of logic and things as such sort.
