But the avatars would override the display images that you already have which would be annoying for some.

This wouldn't please many people. Some people prefer default profiles, Like me.

You can just upload any photo you want to be avatar, Within reason.

Plus people could just download the avatar from someone who has the rank and then upload it as their own. :P

I love seeing lots of posts on the forums, but couldn't this possibly encourage people to post excessively ie. spamming and posting useless things?

Possibly, but I think we're too strict in general with spamming and such. Would make the forums more active.
